Odisha Bagged Two National Awards At The Second Edition Of The Janaagraha City Governance Awards.


Odisha Government bagged two National awards at the Second Edition of the Janaagraha City Governance Awards. The ceremony was conducted through a virtual ceremony presided by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

As per the reports, Odisha Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Principal Secretary G Mathi Vathanan got both the awards. Odisha won in two of the five award categories competing with 54 aspirants across 17 states.

The Housing and Urban Development (H&UDD) won the Best State Award for JAGA Mission for sanctioning of laws, drafting of policies, setting up of institutional mechanisms, programs, or schemes to successfully foster urban decentralization in the cities and State. The JAGA Mission was selected based on Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Act, 2017, and for reconstructing urban slums into liveable homes with concentrated community mobilization and enabling slum dwellers through Slum Development Associations (SDAs).

Meanwhile, the Public Health Engineering Organisation (PHEO), H&UDD won the Best Civic Agency Award for regular access to a piped water supply through demonstrable inter-agency coordination and decentralization in practice.

Priyank Kharge and Arvind Bellad (Members of Legislative Assembly, Karnataka), Amitabh Kant (NITI Aayog), Ashutosh Varshney (Brown University), Niranjan Rajadhyaksha (columnist and economist, IDFC Institute), Sanjeev Chopra, IAS (Director, LBSNAA), Yamini Aiyar (Centre for Policy Research) and S. K. Das, IAS (Retd) were the jury members who decided the awards.

Eminent personalities like – DMA Sangramjit Naik, Deputy Secretary Sarada Panda, and other departmental officers were present on the occasion.

The Janaagraha City Governance Awards have been formed in the memory of Mr. V Ramachandran who was recognized due to his groundbreaking work in decentralization in an urban context by institutions across government. Best State, Best Municipality, Best Civic Agency, Best State Election Commission, and Best State Financial Commission are the five broad categories in the award ceremony.
