Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the Union Cabinet’s nod to the ‘One Nation, One Election’ report by former President Ram Nath Kovind. “The approval of #OneNationOneElection by the Union Cabinet under the leadership of the illustrious Prime Minister of India Shri @narendramodi is a significant and welcome step,” the Chief Minister wrote on X.
The Chief Minister further stated that the decision to approve the ‘One Nation, One Election’ policy will strengthen the security of the country. He said the decision will ensure rapid development in the country by bringing political stability.
“This decision will definitely help in strengthening the security system of the country and accelerating the pace of development. By achieving political stability, it will also give a new direction to the economic development of the country. I wholeheartedly thank the Hon’ble Prime Minister for such a historic decision,” added the Chief Minister.
Lenin Mohanty, a spokesman for the opposition Biju Janata Dal, informed reporters that the BJD had successfully implemented “One Nation, One Election” in Odisha long before PM Modi’s cabinet passed it. Mohanty went on to say that the party held elections in 2004 barely four years after enacting the “One Nation, One Election” program. According to the top BJD leader, the party used the identical strategy to win in 2009, 2014, and 2019. Despite the loss, he asserted that the party continued to promote “One Nation, One Election” due to its merit in the 2024 elections.
However, Mohanty questioned why the BJP government had passed so many laws in the past without them being put into effect. Notably, on Wednesday, the PM Modi administration accepted the findings of a high-level group on the idea of “One Nation, One Election” (ONOE) that was chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. It is anticipated that a bill introducing simultaneous election implementation would be presented in the forthcoming Winter session of Parliament. Part of the 100-day plan of the Modi government is the synchronization of Assembly and Parliamentary elections, which is the goal of this project.
