Odisha Govt Approves Monthly Pension For 21 Persons Imprisoned During Emergency

For 21 individuals who were detained under the MISA, DIR, and DISIR Acts during the National Emergency that lasted from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, the Odisha government has authorized a stipend of Rs 20,000 per month. Starting on January 1, 2025, the pension will be paid retroactively. Following the state government’s statement on Independence Day of last year, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi briefed the Assembly on the decision. According to the declaration, inmates who were imprisoned during the Emergency would be entitled to a pension payment each month.

On January 13, 2025, the government released a resolution in response to the revelation, instructing inmates to submit applications to the appropriate District Magistrates. After reviewing the applications, the District Magistrates sent them on to the State Level Committee. Following its evaluation of the petitions, the State Level Committee suggested that 21 people get a Rs 20,000 monthly pension, which would take effect on January 1, 2025. This suggestion has been accepted by the government, and the pension will be paid out as a result.

In the following stage, the government will also take into account further petitions from MISA, DIR, and DISIR inmates and provide them the same amenities.
