In preparation for the 2025 Kharif season, the fertilizer supply situation in Odisha has been much improved per the directives of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Farmers have been advised not to panic about fabricated rumors of artificial scarcity, as the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment has certified that there is no shortage. Over 58.50 lakh hectares are intended for cultivation, with 34.94 lakh hectares designated for paddy and 23.56 lakh hectares for non-paddy crops, according to the department’s Kharif crop plan. A total of 10.00 lakh metric tons (MT) of fertilizers were scheduled for the season and submitted to the Center for distribution in order to fulfill this need.
In response, the Indian government has given the state 9.55 lakh MT of several types of fertilizers, both complicated and straight. Through concerted efforts, the state government has made sure that MARKFED, PACS, LAMPCS, and retail dealers have access to sufficient fertilizer stockpiles prior to the start of agricultural activities. Odisha had already produced 2.94 lakh MT of fertilizer in all districts as of April 1, 2025. Of the 8.60 lakh MT that were supposed to reach the state by the end of August, 8.10 lakh MT have already arrived. This raises the state’s overall fertilizer supply to 11.04 lakh MT, which includes:
- Urea:84 lakh MT
- DAP:18 lakh MT
- MOP:61 lakh MT
- SSP:34 lakh MT
- NP/NPK/NPKS:05 lakh MT
2.56 lakh MT are still available in all districts, whereas 8.46 lakh MT have already been sold to farmers. Within the following two days, another 11,692 MT of urea will arrive at cooperative societies (PACS and LAMPCS) in transportation. Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, the Agriculture Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, often examines the fertilizer supply chain. Manufacturers of fertilizer have also been directed to keep up a consistent supply for MARKFED, which is responsible for distributing it to local entities in accordance with availability and need.
Only 7.03 lakh MT of fertilizers were sold over the same period last year (2024 Kharif), indicating increased performance this year. The mandatory branding of nano fertilizers has been strongly opposed by the state government. Authorities at IFFCO have been ordered to put an end to these abuses, guaranteeing farmers’ freedom to select fertilizer grades. Officials from MARKFED have also been told to behave appropriately.
The state has sent enforcement teams made up of personnel from the departments of Agriculture, Revenue, and Police to combat illegal sales and fake fertilizers. Retail and wholesale establishments are becoming subject to surprise inspections.
