The Odisha Government recently decided to appoint medical graduates from other states to meet the large-scale vacancies in the public health facilities. But the Post-graduation doctors’ association in Odisha is strongly opposing this decision of appointment.
The Government has proposed to conduct a major recruitment drive to fill up the posts of 2,452 doctors, 82 dental surgeons, and 94 assistant professors in several hospitals and medical colleges. The Post-graduation doctors’ association in Odisha demanded a quick abolish of the decision and stated that students successfully passed from different State-run medical colleges are waiting to get appointments in State hospitals as doctors. Now if the government encourages medical holders outside the state then the future of the students from Odisha will be at stake.
Dr. Harmohan Barik, President of Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack questioned the decision and stated that as many as 1600 students pass every year from government-run medical colleges in Odisha. He further asked that many of them are bereaved of jobs in State, then why the government wants to hire physicians from outside Odisha.
He further added that the Odisha government has executed such rules while the other States have no such plans. Even earlier only residents of Odisha who can read, write and speak Odia, and those who have passed middle school examination in Odia as a language subject or passed matriculation or equivalent with Odia as a medium of examination in the non-language subject were eligible for the recruitment in State-run hospitals.
