In accordance with the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulations of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1979, the Odisha government has granted licenses to 626 contractors operating within the State to employ 40,088 migrant laborers outside the State until October 2023. In response to a written question from Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati of Jeypore in the Odisha Assembly, Minister of Labor and Employees State Insurance Sarada Prasad Nayak provided this information.
The Minister shared information that showed that the Bolangir district had issued 402 contractor licenses for the largest number of migrant laborers—26,151—who were sent to other states. Nuapada had issued 103 licenses for the highest number of migrant laborers—8205—who were sent to other states. According to Nayak, the State government has integrated migrant workers into a number of employment creation and self-employment initiatives.
Aside from this, Nayak stated that since 2020, the State government has been executing a special assistance program for migrant workers in 20 blocks of the districts of Bolangir, Bargarh, Kalahandi, and Nuapada.
