President Droupadi Murmu Gives Nod To Three Criminal Bills

The three criminal law bills that the Parliament recently passed, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (which aims to replace the Indian Penal Code), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (which aims to replace the Code of Criminal Procedure), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita (which aims to replace the Indian Evidence Act), received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu on Monday. These bills, which were approved by the Parliament last Thursday, have become law after receiving the President’s assent.

The Indian Evidence Act, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Penal Code, which were previously in place, have all been repealed. The three criminal bills essentially seek to modernize the criminal codes from the colonial era, emphasizing the harsher punishments for offenses like lynching, terrorism, and offenses endangering national security.

Home Minister Amit Shah stated last Thursday, in response to a debate in the Upper House, that the Bills that repeal and replace the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act will usher in a new era in the criminal justice system.
