Rishi Sunak to create history, will be UK’s first Indian-origin prime minister minister

Rishi Sunak, the Conservative Party leader, became the first British Prime Minister of Indian descent on Monday

Rishi Sunak, the Conservative Party leader, became the first British Prime Minister of Indian descent on Monday after his rival Penny Mordaunt backed out pledging full support. Rishi Sunak, of Indian origin, who lost to Liz Truss in the race for Prime Minister in September, has emerged as the strongest contender this time around.

Sunak’s prime ministerial bid was confirmed after former Prime Minister Boris Johnson dropped out of the race.

On Sunday, the former UK chancellor formally declared his candidacy for the Conservative Party leadership election, with the goal of succeeding Liz Truss as British Prime Minister and “fixing the economy.”

Sunak’s victory represents a remarkable turnaround in his political fortunes after losing to outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss just last month. His popularity among party colleagues did not translate into a larger Tory membership vote.

Sunak is the son of Yashvir, an Indian-origin general practitioner, and Usha, a pharmacist. During the previous campaign, he spoke extensively about his migrant roots, citing references to making history by lighting Diwali diyas at 11 Downing Street as the first Indian-origin Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Liz resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after only 45 days in office due to economic turmoil and the resignation of two key ministers.
