In order to alleviate the state’s heat wave crisis in the summer of 2025, the Odisha government has modified the school calendar. The new steps were outlined in an order sent to all collectors by Shalini Pandit, the Commissioner-turned-Secretary of the School and Mass Education Department.
Class I–XII school hours have been moved from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM, effective immediately, as part of these initiatives. The goal of the decision is to shield pupils from the intense heat, which can cause serious health problems like heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and cramping. Along with the updated schedules, schools have been told to make sure that drinking water is available and to give staff and pupils enough ORS packets if necessary.
Similarly, in order to avoid being exposed to heat wave conditions, outdoor activities will be limited. Additionally, schools may set aside time to provide pupils heat wave safety advice, and parents have been urged to make sure their kids bring a water bottle to school. Additionally, the government has given district magistrates and collectors the authority to alter school schedules in response to local weather circumstances.
