The Election Commission of India (EC) has projected that conducting simultaneous elections in 2029 will require approximately Rs 7,951 crore. In its submission to the committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind on ‘One Nation One Election’ (ONOE), the EC highlighted the necessity for a “definite lead time” to effectively manage the extensive logistical challenges. These challenges include updating electoral rolls, acquiring additional voting machines, and coordinating security forces. The commission’s assessment underscores the complexities involved in implementing this ambitious electoral reform across the country.
The European Commission has recognized the likelihood of new EVM models being introduced before 2029, which may necessitate the replacement of all existing machines. This development complicates the procurement process significantly. Furthermore, the Commission anticipates a substantial increase in manpower requirements, including presiding officers and polling personnel, to oversee the expanded number of polling stations. This increase is essential to ensure the integrity and security of the electoral process. The combination of evolving technology and heightened personnel needs presents a complex challenge for the upcoming elections, underscoring the importance of effective planning and resource allocation.
