Team India’s Next Test Captain: Who Will Take The Successful Baton Ahead

Team India's Next Test Captain: Who Will Take The Successful Baton Ahead

Towards the end of the last week, Team India’s most successful captain gave a shocker. Virat Kohli has given up T20 Captaincy, RCB leadership role and being sacked as Team India ODI captain, announced his resignation from India’s Test captain as well. The news came just after a day India lost the series against South Africa by 2-1.

The decision was a shocker because apart from the series loss and the WTC finals lost, Team India in test cricket was one of the most fearful sides, thanks to the leadership of Virat Kohli. With 40 wins in 68 matches, Virat is the most successful test captain of India. Moreover, he was just 13 wins away to become the most successful test captain in the world, which could have easily been achieved within 2023. Also, leading the test to rank 1 in 6 consecutive years and leaving the side as a captain when the team is rank 1 is not a cup of tea for everyone. Such has been the great legacy of Virat Kohli in Test cricket.

The decision is also a shocker because of the current dynamics of the team. Team India is quite settled in white-ball cricket. Even if, Virat Kohli is not the captain, India has Rohit Sharma who is a master of ODI cricket and a great leader as well by winning for Mumbai Indians 5 times and also winning the Asia Cup and Nidhadas Trophy as well.

However, things are not easy cup-cake when it comes to Test Cricket. Rohit Sharma, even though is settled has a lot of issues with injuries of late. Rahane’s poor form is much worse that he might not be in playing 11 in the next series. The same goes with Pujara as well. Fitness might be an issue with Bumrah and Ashwin and KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant still needs to be groomed as a captain. So, it’s a great selector’s headache of who will be the next test captain of India.

Well, even though it’s certain that selectors will put faith in Rohit Sharma to become the next captain. However, Rohit needs to be fit and also carry the legacy of Virat Kohli in the upcoming series.
