According to Deputy Director General (DDG), Telecom BB Pandey, up to 99% of mobile phone customers in Odisha got test emergency alert messages and an emergency tone from the government through the “Cell Broadcast Alert System” today. The remaining 1% of cases are being investigated.
During a news conference held here, DDG Pandey stated that the “Cell Broadcast Alert System” intends to offer residents real-time alerts about disasters like as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and more through networks of mobile phone service providers. But since this was a test message, Pandey added, there’s no reason to panic.
He explained that the notice was a component of a test run for the nation’s new emergency alert system, which is being implemented by the State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMA) of the states in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
What the alert text said:
“This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent through the Cell Broadcasting System by Department of Telecommunication, Government of India. Please ignore this message as no action is required from your end. This message has been sent to the TEST Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by National Disaster Management Authority. It aims to enhance public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies,” read the flash message received by several smartphone users.
