“Third Mumbai,” a new city, is in the works

The government of Maharashtra has made the decision to build a new city adjacent to its capital. It will be referred to as “Third Mumbai.” The goal is to give the expanding population of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) better housing, infrastructure, and reliable transportation options. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, popularly known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, will connect the planned new city to Mumbai and be constructed around the future Navi Mumbai International Airport (MTHL). To give the new city shape, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) established the New Town Development Authority (NTDA).

The NTDA will include Ulwe, Pen, Panvel, Uran, Karjat, and the surrounding areas, totaling 323 square kilometers. There are probably 200 villages total, 80–90 of which are under the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA).

Navi Mumbai is about 344 sq km in size, and Mumbai is about 600 sq km. Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is planning a new Panvel-Karjat suburban rail corridor at a cost of Rs 812 crore in order to improve public transportation. It will link the MMR district of Raigad with Navi Mumbai. The project will cover five stations, including Panvel and Karjat, with three tunnels and two railway flyovers.
