The surge of OTT platforms in the entertainment arena(FilMe) has opened up a wide source of options for the viewers to watch quality content from their homes’ comfort. Due to the creators and directors’ artistic freedom in the online entertainment platforms, we are witnessing some great quality movies and web series in recent times. However, almost all the OTT platforms work on a monthly-yearly fees model. Therefore, even if a person does not like other shows on a particular platform, they have to pay for them. However, there is nothing to worry about anymore. With FilMe, one can now only pay for the movie/web series he or she wants to watch, thanks to the creation of Dr. Abhishek Shukla.
Interview Times had a great conversation with Dr. Abhishek Shukla and got to know more about FilMe. This is how the interview went-
Can you brief about yourself to our readers?
Hi, I am Dr. Abhishek Shukla. I am an innovator with two granted patents under my name. I have loads of research and academic works published in Australia. I hold a Doctor of Philosophy degree in International Business and Strategic Management from the reputed Melbourne Business School, University of Melbourne, Australia. My latest innovation pushes the boundaries of content distribution and introduces a novel way of monetizing content. My patent in “online-offline integration on a single platform” opens the door for content creators to reach the previously inaccessible audience in tier 2 and tier 3 at a fraction of the original cost.
When and how did the concept of Filme came to your mind?
When I directed my second feature film, I realized that it’s a struggle for independent films to reach their audience. Upon further research, it seemed that I was only scratching the surface. The problem was shared by even bigger budget films, which could reach only 10% of the market. This was primarily due to a lack of organized infrastructure and the high capital-intensive nature of movie theatres. Hence FilMe was born, a cool product which can be sold at any retail outlet like departmental stores, mobile shop, or even at your home.
Are you a single owner of the app, or you work in a collaboration?
First of all, I want to clear to all that FilMe is not an app. FilMe is ready to use a model of watching films without any monthly subscription or app download. I am the managing director of FilMe and a Singapore based client who is it’s Patreon.
Can you brief us about how Filme works?
The beauty of FilMe is that consumer already knows how to use it. The steps to use are:
• Scratch the card.
• Scan the QR code by simply opening the camera.
• Movie poster opens automatically on your phone browser.
• Enter the mobile number to receive the OTP.
• Enter OTP and enjoy the movie.
No app download, no subscription.
How has been the response of Filme so far? Are you happy with it?
The response from the consumer’s end is phenomenal. We are in the volume game, and consumers are lapping up the product. Simultaneously, we have also launched in UAE, and one of their biggest retailers placed an order of about half a million cards in the first week of effective operation. We are overwhelmed with the response so far.
We are already witnessing a surge of the audience in the OTT platforms. What help will FilMe provide these audiences?
OTT platforms proffer a natural choice to consumers. There is a definite push towards such platforms. However, unfortunately, the majority of these platforms (nearly 40) work on a subscription model. A subscription model is one where there is a monthly fee attached, irrespective of its usage.
However, FilMe breaks the mold and does not work in a subscription model. It adopts a free and easy method where you purchase whichever movie you want to see. Therefore, through FilMe, you pay only for the movie/series, you want to watch.
FilMe works in the ala carte way.
Any plans for Filme in the future?
Yes, definitely. FilMe is creeping close to having the First Day and Fist Show of upcoming blockbuster films directly on the app. There are exciting times that await the audience in the future.
