In an era where responsible business practices are shaping the future of industry, Hindalco Industries Limited, a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, stands as a compelling example of how corporate social responsibility (CSR) can transform lives. Rooted in a legacy of more than 150 years of ethical business philosophy, the company’s approach to CSR goes far beyond compliance—it represents a deep commitment to inclusive growth, sustainable development, and community empowerment.
At the heart of this philosophy lies the principle of trusteeship, inspired by the legacy of G.D. Birla and Mahatma Gandhi, which views business as a custodian of societal progress. Hindalco’s CSR vision reflects this ethos by striving to actively contribute to the social and economic development of the communities where it operates, particularly among marginalized sections of society.
A Vision Anchored in Sustainable Growth
Hindalco’s CSR initiatives align closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), integrating people-centric development with environmental sustainability and economic resilience. The company’s vision emphasizes improving quality of life while fostering inclusive and sustainable growth for underserved communities.
Under the leadership of Rajashree Birla, Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development, and supported by a structured governance framework, CSR initiatives are strategically designed, implemented, and monitored to ensure measurable impact. A dedicated CSR committee at the board level oversees policy and direction, while specialized teams coordinate implementation across regions and operational units.
A Wide Footprint of Impact
Hindalco’s CSR activities span across 11 states and one union territory, covering over 770 villages and impacting nearly 1.8 million people. The initiatives are concentrated around five core pillars:
Education
Healthcare
Sustainable Livelihood
Infrastructure Development
Social Transformation
In Odisha, the company’s operations in Sambalpur and Sundargarh districts form a crucial hub for CSR interventions. Through facilities such as the Aditya Aluminium plant in Lapanga and the Hirakud smelter, Hindalco engages closely with surrounding communities, addressing their developmental needs in a structured and participatory manner.
Empowering the Next Generation Through Education
Education remains one of the most powerful drivers of social transformation, and Hindalco has invested heavily in strengthening educational infrastructure and learning outcomes.
Through Project Adhyayan, the company has introduced digital classrooms in 20 schools benefiting more than 2,000 students, established mini science centres in eight schools, and set up libraries to encourage reading habits among rural students. Additional classrooms, remedial coaching centres, and academic support programmes have further improved learning opportunities for children in nearby villages.
Complementing these efforts is Project Sishu Vatika, which focuses on early childhood education by revamping anganwadi centres. So far, 38 centres have been upgraded, benefitting over 1,100 children with improved learning environments, hygiene practices, and support materials.
Bridging the Skill Gap
Recognizing the importance of employability, Hindalco has established the Aditya Birla Skill Centre in Sambalpur, which offers industry-aligned training programmes across multiple sectors. Courses in electrical work, fashion technology, financial services, and retail have helped prepare young people for real-world job markets.
More than 373 students have enrolled in these programmes, with a significant number securing employment after completing their training. The initiative not only enhances employability but also promotes gender inclusion, with a strong participation of women trainees.
Healthcare at the Doorstep
Access to quality healthcare remains a challenge in many rural regions. Hindalco’s Project Aarogya addresses this gap by strengthening healthcare facilities and services across the region.
The initiative supports specialist doctors at community health centres, provides ambulance services, and establishes first-aid facilities and dispensaries. A particularly impactful programme is Swasthya Vahini, which operates mobile medical units delivering free consultations and medicines to remote villages. These units currently serve 28 villages and five wards, ensuring that essential healthcare reaches communities that would otherwise remain underserved.
In addition, a vision centre established in Rengali has facilitated thousands of cataract surgeries and continues to offer affordable eye care services, contributing to improved public health and road safety awareness among truck drivers through dedicated eye-check camps.
Strengthening Rural Livelihoods
Economic empowerment forms another critical dimension of Hindalco’s CSR work. Through Project Unnati, the company supports agricultural development by providing irrigation systems, pest management training, and exposure visits for farmers. More than 1,000 farmers have benefitted from initiatives such as solar irrigation, nutrition gardens, and livestock development.
Equally transformative is Project Shakti, aimed at women’s empowerment. The programme has strengthened nearly 2,940 women through 268 self-help groups (SHGs). These groups are engaged in activities such as tailoring, nutritional product production, and traditional crafts.
A notable example is the revival of bamboo craftsmanship in Laumal village, where women artisans now produce multiple varieties of bamboo products and participate in state and national exhibitions. This initiative has revived traditional skills while generating steady incomes for tribal households.
Building Infrastructure and Social Capital
Beyond livelihood and social services, Hindalco’s CSR initiatives have also focused on infrastructure development that improves everyday life. From constructing bridges and community centres to installing LED streetlights and CCTV surveillance systems for public safety, the company has played a key role in strengthening local infrastructure.
Projects such as town halls, roads, and sports facilities have also contributed to community engagement and social cohesion.
A Model for Responsible Industry
Driving these initiatives is a robust implementation process that includes community consultations, baseline studies, partnerships with government and NGOs, and rigorous monitoring and evaluation systems. Projects are designed with a bottom-up approach, ensuring that development efforts align with real community needs and evolve toward community-led ownership.
The impact of these efforts has been widely recognized through numerous awards and accolades, including national CSR awards and recognitions for social leadership and innovation in community development.
Leadership Behind the Impact
Guiding these initiatives on the ground is Siba Sankar Mahapatra, Head of CSR for Odisha and Downstream Clusters at Hindalco. With more than 28 years of experience in development management, Mahapatra has worked with leading organizations such as the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, CARE India, and ACCESS Development Services before joining Hindalco. His expertise in CSR planning, partnership management, and project implementation has played a key role in shaping the company’s community development strategy.
Towards a Better Tomorrow
Hindalco’s CSR initiatives demonstrate how industry can become a catalyst for meaningful change. By investing in education, healthcare, livelihoods, and infrastructure, the company is not merely supporting communities—it is helping them build self-reliant futures.
As industries increasingly recognize their role in shaping sustainable societies, Hindalco’s work in Odisha offers a powerful example of how responsible business practices can drive inclusive development and create lasting social impact.
