Two More Succumbs To Burns; Death Toll Reaches Six In Puri Cracker Tragedy

After two more people passed away on Friday from their burn injuries while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, the number of fatalities from the Puri cracker explosion incident increased to six. The Special Relief Commissioner’s (SRC) office verified the two fatalities.

Soumya Ranjan Sahoo, 13, and Samrudhi Sahoo, 4, passed away from their wounds while receiving care at a Bhubaneswar private hospital. Four people, including a kid, had previously perished in the terrible catastrophe. The two-year-old girl was the only victim of the disaster; two other children died the next day from their wounds while receiving medical attention. At present, various hospitals located in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Puri are treating 24 injured individuals, 12 of them are in serious condition.

A pile of crackers detonated during the trinity’s Chapa Khela (water sporting) as part of Chandan Yatra in Narendra Puskarini on May 29, inflicting burn injuries on a total of thirty individuals. When the disaster occurred, hundreds of people had gathered on the water body’s banks to get a view. An explosion happened when a splinter from the flaming crackers touched the pile when a group of devotees were enjoying the holiday with crackers.

To save their lives, a few of the devotees dove into the pond. The critically injured were eventually moved to Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. Initially, the injured were brought to the Puri district headquarters hospital.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik instructed the relevant authorities to make sure the injured receive the right care after expressing sorrow over the event. He declared that the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund will cover the expense of the therapy.
