Two ‘RTI activists’ demand a 30L ransom from a BMC officer

After sending a BMC officer a text message with the details of his property, two people from Andheri have been arrested and charged with extorting 30 lakh from him.An officer employed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was the target of an extortion attempt on Thursday by two Andheri residents who demanded a sum of money equal to 30 lakh. A recent text message including a link to a PDF file providing information about the different properties owned by the 54-year-old civic official who works at Material Testing Laboratory in Worli was received.

Following that, two individuals identified as Hemant Kalia, 50, and Santosh Chaudhari, 47, who pretended to be RTI and human rights activists, called. In order to “settle the matter,” they sought 30 lakh; if not, they threatened to reveal the officer’s financial information.”The complainant was astonished to find the information about his properties when he opened the communication. A police inspector from the Worli police station said that when the man asked about the sender’s phone number, he discovered that it was registered in the name of a human rights activist.

The two Andheri residents were arrested by the police on the basis of the complaint. According to a police officer from the Worli police station, “after preliminary investigation, we have registered an offence against the two persons under sections 389 (putting a person in fear of accusation of offence in order to commit extortion) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.”
Police officer: “We are also verifying how they got the complainant’s details or his property details.” “We are yet to make arrests in the case,” he added.
