Ollywood legendary actor Bijay Mohanty passed away at the age of 70 in a private hospital grieving the whole Ollywood fraternity. He was suffering from a heart ailment and also underwent treatment at Hyderabad. Later he brought back to Bhubaneswar last month. 

For the past couple of years, his health was in a serious condition where he was enduring treatment at Hyderabad and then he was brought back to Odisha in a special ambulance. Later on 14th June, he was admitted to the Care Hospital and after stabilizing his health he was then discharged. On 3rd July he was re-admitted to a private hospital.

Bijay Mohanty was born on 8th April 1950 at Pandiri, Kendrapara, and was brought up in Baripada, Mayurbhanj. He completed his graduation in Bachelor of Arts and later joined the National School of Drama (NSD) where he Legendary Hindi cinema actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Om Puri who were his classmate

He started his career with the film Chilika Teerey where he won the National award in 1977. And since that, there was no looking back in his movie career.

He worked in several Odia films including Naga Phasa, Samay Bada Balaban, Danda Balunga, Sahari Bagha, Chaka Bhaunri, and Chaka Akhi Sabu Dekhuchi. He has worked in more than 300 Odia films, along with 40 Bengali movies with two South Indian movies and one Hindi film.

He even directed ‘Bhuli Huena’ in 1987. He received enormous appreciation and critical praise in every role of his movies. He also worked on the television which was aired in Doordarshan.

Asara Aloka, Sri Jagannath, Subhadra, Sara Akasa, Samaya Chaka, Sakalara Apekhya Re, Nadekhile LokDekhe, Mahayagyan, and Bidhatara Khela are some of his television work. He was honored with six state awards, a National award, and Jaydev award for his contribution to the art and culture.

He was married to Tandra Ray who is also a successful actress in the Odia industry. He had a brief career in politics also when he joined the Indian National Congress party in 2014. He contested to be a member of parliament from Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha but unfortunately lost. After he resigned from the Congress party, he quit politics completely. 

With his demise, the Ollywood fraternity lost a gem. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik along with the Union Minister of Petroleum Dharmendra Pradhan extended their condolences.

“CM @Naveen_Odisha has expressed deep grief over the passing away of renowned film actor & director #BijayMohanty. CM said, his death marks the end of an era and has created a deep void in the Odia film industry. CM announced that the veteran actor will be cremated with state honours” Honorable CM tweeted on his demise.

The mortal remains will be taken to his residence at Bomikhal, then to the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya where the teachers and students will pay their last tribute. Later, the body will be taken to Satya Nagar for cremation with full state honours. Many Ollywood stars along with other politics and sports personality paid their tributes to the veteran actor on social media.
