VK Sasikala, former associate of the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha and a convicted in a non-income property case, was fined Rs 10 crore in Bengaluru court on Wednesday. Her lawyer said Sasikala was now expected to be released from jail soon. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami has made it clear that there will be no change in Annadramukar’s approach to maintaining distance from his family in the possible release of Sasikala. He said both the party and the government would maintain their distance from Sasikala.

Palaniswami, from Coimbatore, said there would be no change in the party’s approach to Sasikala’s case. Sasikala’s lawyer Raja Sentur Pandian said the Bengaluru court had fined her Rs 10 crore. The court will soon inform the jail authorities of the amount of the fine. Sasikala is expected to be released from jail by the 21st of this month. “Sasikala will be released early and the legal process in this regard is ongoing,” her lawer said.

Notably, Sasikala was convicted in February 2016 in a Rs 4 crore illegal case and was sentenced on the same day. The Supreme Court upheld the sentence handed down by the lower court against Sasikala and two of his relatives. She then surrendered in court on February 15, 2017. The court sentenced the three to jail and fined them Rs 10,000 in addition to Rs 10 crore.
