Between February 22 and 23, 109 fire sites were found in various forest divisions throughout Odisha amid the skyrocketing mercury levels.
As per the data provided by the Forest Survey of India (FSI), more than sixty fire points have been identified in the Koraput circle inside the Nabarangpur division. The remaining fire points are located in several forest divisions, namely Bhubaneswar, Angul, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Baripada, Berhampur, and Bhawanipatna circles. Large fire sites were found at two of them, according to Forest Department sources: one at the Ghona beat of the Raigarh range in the Nabarangpur division and the other at the Harachandi beat of the Brahmagiri range in the Puri wildlife division.
According to further sources, the district fire prevention and management action plan 2024–25 has already been prepared to monitor forest fire incidences throughout the current fire season. In order to avoid similar accidents, the divisional forest officials have been ordered to keep up proper fire lines in forests that are susceptible to them and to keep raising community awareness. In order to cut off fuel from the main fire, firefighters typically build a fire line far from the blaze and burn the area in between.
