According to a report released on Friday, as India begins to roll out 5G services in select cities, 43% of those interested in switching to 5G are unwilling to pay anything more than the current tariff for 3G or 4G services.
While many more smartphone users are likely to join if the transition to 5G addresses issues such as call drop/connect, network availability, and low speed, another 43% are willing to pay up to 10% more in tariff, according to a report by online community platform LocalCircles.
Only 2% indicated a willingness to pay a 25-50% increase in tariff for 5G.
In comparison to 4G speeds in India of 40-50 Mbps depending on location and connectivity, 5G services are expected to support speeds of 300 Mbps or higher.
For the first phase of launch, Reliance Jio and Airtel have chosen Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Varanasi, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jamnagar, Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Pune, Lucknow, Kolkata, Siliguri, Gurugram, and Hyderabad.
According to the report, only 5% of mobile subscribers polled are prepared to transition to 5G by 2022.
Over 100 million of India’s more than 500 million smartphone users are expected to have a 5G-ready device by the end of this year.
According to the findings, nearly 24% of respondents said they have no plans to buy a new upgraded device in the near future, while another 22% are undecided.
