36,000 primary teachers’ appointments are cancelled by the Calcutta High Court

36,000 teachers had their appointments annulled, but Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay said they could still work for the next four months at the parateacher wage.The West Bengal government has three months to fill the openings after the Calcutta high court ordered the cancellation of the appointments of 36,000 primary school teachers who were allegedly hired through fraud in the 2016 hiring process.

The bench of justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay ruled they can continue to work for the next four months but would have to do so at the lower income of a para teacher after cancelling the appointment of 36,000 instructors.
“In total, 42500 primary teachers were hired in 2016, but 36,000 of those appointments have been rescinded. An attorney from the high court who was present at the hearing remarked, “The bench stated that the teachers were appointed without any aptitude exam.In December 2022, the high court made it plain that, in the event of a conviction, it would throw out the whole panel of applicants who passed the Teachers’ Eligibility Test.According to the Calcutta High Court’s directives, the Central Bureau of Investigation is looking into claims of corruption in the hiring of teachers and non-teaching staff members. Later, the Enforcement Directorate joined the investigation. Those detained in this case include former West Bengal Board of Primary Education head Manik Bhattacharya and former Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee.
