New Covid Variant Eris detected in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, India, there are indicators of a rise in COVID-19 cases. One such strain that WHO is closely watching is the most recent strain, EG5.1, commonly known as Eris. India needs to exercise caution because vaccine immunity is likely declining and Covid proper behaviour has fallen by the wayside. “We must refrain from classifying this as a “rise” in cases without further observation,” the World Health Organisation warns. Before making any judgements, the situation needs to be evaluated for roughly a week. Between June and September, respiratory illnesses often experience an increase.

As a result, we are carefully observing the situation. Only in the last three to four days have we seen a minor increase in COVID-19 instances, according to a senior state official.
The reason of the increase in case numbers in both the UK and the US has been identified as the COVID variation EG.5.1, also known as Eris. A sub-strain of Omicron XBB.1.9 is known as Eris.By late July, there were only 70 active cases; by August 6, there were 115. Maharashtra recorded 109 new cases on Monday. Mumbai has the most active instances among the cities, followed by Pune with 34 and Thane with 25. According to the most recent data, there is just one active case each in Raigad, Sangli, Solapur, Satara, and Palghar.

According to medical experts, COVID variants XBB.1.16 and XBB.2.3 are still the most common strains in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, health professionals have highlighted that India has had Eris since May.The recent appearance of the COVID variant EG.5.1 has prompted a health alarm in the UK. On July 31, this subvariant was formally recognised after a significant rise in infections was connected to it.
