Mrs. Sasmita Hota, the visionary founder of our Patachitra fashion venture, embarked on a remarkable journey blending traditional artistry with modern fashion. Her unwavering passion for preserving Odisha’s cultural heritage through contemporary designs has led to the creation of unique, narrative-driven pieces that celebrate the art of Patachitra while making it accessible to a global audience.
1. Can you share your journey into the world of Patachitra fashion design? What inspired you to combine traditional art with modern fashion?
Modern fashion often revolves around fashion design, and from a young age, I had a strong passion for styling my clothing. Over time, I became captivated by Patachitra designs, which I discovered adorning temple walls and wall hangings in Odisha. Patachitra, a traditional art form of Odisha, inspired me to launch an initiative aimed at associating Patachitra with Odisha in people’s minds. I worked on incorporating these intricate designs into clothing to promote this beautiful heritage art.
2. How do you ensure that the essence and authenticity of Patachitra are preserved while incorporating it into contemporary fashion designs?
In our quest for novelty, we must tap into our creativity to craft fresh concepts. Patachitra, a traditional art form, once symbolized divine grace like Radha Krishna’s and Lord Jagannath’s. However, we’re now infusing it with thematic elements. For instance, when an Odisha bride dons a saree, each fold narrates her wedding journey. This innovation allows the bride to wear a saree that tells the story of her marriage, creating a timeless narrative within the fabric.
3. What techniques do you use to adapt intricate Patachitra motifs and designs onto different types of clothing and accessories? Could you explain the significance of colors and patterns in Patachitra and how you translate that onto your fashion creations?
Our approach excludes modern methods, as our aim is to safeguard Odisha’s rich art and culture while providing employment to artists. We rely solely on traditional tools like pencils, scales, and brushes, utilizing acrylic colors. Additionally, our wall hangings employ natural dyes, which, when washed, maintain their vibrant hues, ensuring the preservation of our artistic heritage.

4. Collaborations often bring fresh perspectives. Have you collaborated with artisans or other designers to create unique Patachitra fashion pieces?
Collaboration is essential for fostering innovation. In our endeavor to produce unique pieces, we partner with local weavers to source materials for our Odisha clothing. Furthermore, our creative process involves collaboration with a diverse group of 120 artists, uniting their skills and perspectives to craft distinctive works of art. This collective effort fuels our creativity and contributes to the development of exceptional pieces.
5. How do you ensure that your designs are both marketable and accessible to a wider audience, while also paying fair tribute to the artisans’ efforts? Sambalpuri Patachitra carries stories and symbolism. Do you infuse these narratives into your designs? If so, could you share an example?
Certainly! Patachitra art is exclusively narrative-driven. I recently undertook a project for a lady celebrating her baby shower, where we crafted a stunning piece featuring Lord Sri Krishna. Our creations are tailored to the unique essence of each event, ensuring a personalized touch that perfectly captures the occasion’s spirit and significance.
6. How do you see the future of Patachitra fashion evolving? What trends or changes do you anticipate in the coming years?
Patachitra deserves global recognition, with every household adorning a Patachitra saree. The intricate artistry, while challenging and expensive, is a passion for us. We strive to offer affordability without compromising quality, aiming to preserve cherished memories through our art. Our commitment extends to supporting Odisha’s talented artists, promoting the rich artistic heritage of the region on a broader scale.
