BHUBANESWAR: The southwest monsoon has begun withdrawing from Odisha, with the process starting on October 13 and expected to conclude by Tuesday, October 15. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the monsoon has completely retreated from several districts, including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Puri, among others. It has also withdrawn from most parts of Bolangir, Kandhamal, and Ganjam, and partial areas of Nuapada and Kalahandi.
Despite normal rainfall during the monsoon season, the state experienced scanty rainfall over the past two weeks. Odisha received 1,092 mm of rain between June 1 and September 30, which is 5% below the normal average. Malkangiri recorded the highest rainfall at 1,982.1 mm, followed by Nuapada with 1,236.6 mm. The rest of the districts saw normal rainfall during the season, but post-monsoon, no district has reported normal rainfall levels.
Meanwhile, a low-pressure area has formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal, which could influence the state’s weather conditions in the coming days.
