The Odisha government intends to introduce five more female tigers to Similipal Tiger Reserve on Tuesday, according to Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia. The government wants to increase the number of tigers in Similipal, which now stands at 40, by bringing in additional tigresses.
After being transported from Maharashtra, a Royal Bengal tigress named “Yamuna” was successfully released into Similipal just two days ago. The program aims to control the population and encourage healthy reproduction among the tigers, according to the Chief Conservator of Forests for Similipal.
“Since 2014, there has been only one male tiger in Similipal, leading to uncontrolled breeding and the emergence of variations such as melanistic tigers,” he noted.
