Maxim Naumov, the son of 1994 World Figure Skating champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who tragically died in the American Airlines crash, paid an emotional tribute to his late parents during a charity event in Washington, D.C. On January 29, the couple was killed when their passenger plane collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter, resulting in the loss of 67 lives, including several members of the skating community.
In a touching performance, Maxim, 23, skated to his parents’ favorite song, “The City That Doesn’t Exist,” a tune that held special meaning for them as they often slow-danced together to it. Following the performance, Maxim broke down in tears, sitting on the ice as the crowd showed their support. The emotional moment moved many on social media, with users expressing their sympathy for Maxim, who had flown home two days earlier and was not on the ill-fated flight. One user shared, “My heart aches for this young man… His performance was so beautiful, and such a tribute to them.” The Naumovs, former world champion ice skaters, had been living in the U.S. since 1998.
