FEATURE: Architecture is more than the art of constructing buildings—it is the craft of transforming spaces, enriching communities, and preserving cultural heritage. Few architects embody this philosophy as seamlessly as Ar. Swopnadutta Mohanty. A visionary in the field, she has seamlessly blended innovation, sustainability, and urban aesthetics to redefine Odisha’s architectural landscape. With a career spanning over two decades, her work reflects a rare synthesis of technical precision and creative brilliance, cementing her legacy as a leading force in the industry.
Born and raised in Bhubaneswar, the daughter of eminent Odia litterateur and professor Dr. Bijoy Ku. Mohanty and Mrs. Renubala Mohanty, a distinguished philosophy scholar, Swopnadutta’s creative instincts were nurtured in an intellectually vibrant environment that fostered a deep appreciation for knowledge and artistic expression. Initially guided toward engineering, she soon recognized her true calling in architecture. After completing her schooling at Stewart School and higher secondary education at BJB College, she pursued an architectural degree at Piloo Mody College of Architecture, where she thrived academically and developed a profound understanding of design principles.
A distinguished architect and academician since 2004, Ar. Swopnadutta Mohanty has made remarkable contributions to the field of architecture through her visionary approach, sustainable design philosophies, and leadership. She completed her Masters in Architecture from CET (now OUTR). Determined to refine her expertise, she immersed herself in conceptual planning, detailing, and execution, quickly gaining hands-on industry experience. Her exceptional talent and commitment distinguished her early on, setting the foundation for a promising career.
Graduating in 2003 and receiving her certification in 2004, she entered the professional realm with an entrepreneurial vision. In 2004, she co-founded her first architectural firm, operating in partnership until 2015. With a drive for transformative design, she later established her independent consultancy, Scapers Consultancy Services. Under her leadership, the firm has become a hub of innovation, specializing in urban development, sustainable design, and modern infrastructure planning, significantly influencing Odisha’s architectural evolution.
A major breakthrough in her career came in 2005 when her firm won a prestigious government competition under the Odisha Tourism Department. This recognition opened new doors, allowing her to collaborate with policymakers, government officials, and industry leaders. Between 2008 and 2011, she played a crucial role in conceptualizing and executing Bhubaneswar’s urban beautification projects, including roadside landscaping, murals, and public space enhancements. Working closely with then-Municipal Commissioner Aparajita Sarangi, she spearheaded initiatives that transformed the city’s visual and structural identity.
Beyond Bhubaneswar, her expertise spans across envisioning residences, apartments, gated communities, commercial complexes, hospitals, institutional campuses, public spaces, waterfront development, hospitality zones, exposition designs, and cityscaping. Scapers Consultancy Services, under her leadership, has driven transformative projects across Odisha. Her expertise in vernacular and landscaping earned her the prestigious National Award for Best Landscape Designer for Kalinga Kanan—the roadside landscaping from Kalinga Stadium to Jaydev Vihar—along with numerous other national and state recognitions for her unique, innovative, and context-driven roadside beautifications and architectural projects. Being a part of Nesters, she was the Consultant to the World Bank for Integrated Coastal Zone Development at Chilika and Tampera, designing various waterfront developments that included large-scale bamboo constructions, introduced for the first time in Odisha.
Some of her celebrated projects include designing tourist destinations and waterfront developments across Odisha, exposition designs for Toshali and Adivasi Melas, streetscaping and rotary beautifications in Bhubaneswar, interior designs for Boyanika and Utkalika showrooms, and master planning of Tampera Lake and other tourist destinations. These include innovative urban design initiatives, sustainable space planning, and large-scale infrastructure development. With a keen ability to merge contemporary architectural practices with Odisha’s rich cultural identity, her firm has redefined public infrastructure across the state. Notable projects include sustainable tourism developments in Koraput, Balasore, and Deomali, where she designed trekking trails and eco-sensitive architectural solutions that seamlessly integrate with nature. Now, as the Proprietor of Scapers Consultancy Services, her own consultancy firm, she is involved in designing public spaces, restaurants, hotels, and integrated green farming campuses. She is also deeply engaged in exploring tribal settlements and their living patterns to develop model tribal units in all districts, including designing key spaces for the Tribal Museum.
Challenges have always served as catalysts for her creativity. One of her most demanding projects involved unexpected site excavations that unearthed massive boulders, disrupting the initial design plan. Rather than perceiving them as obstacles, she reimagined them as artistic sculptures, pioneering the integration of stone sculpturing in Odisha’s urban spaces. Her ability to transform setbacks into opportunities for artistic expression and functional design has consistently set her apart.
Apart from being a dedicated professional, she is also an academician and teaches in schools of architecture. She takes great interest in sharing her knowledge with budding architects, nurturing the next generation of the profession. Her contributions extend beyond professional practice into academia. She has been an academician as well as a guest faculty at CET and PMCA, contributing significantly to architectural education. Her expertise has also benefited budding architects at VSSUT Burla and NIT Rourkela, where she has shared her insights as an expert. She has played a vital role in mentoring the next generation of architects, organizing numerous knowledge-sharing platforms, and bridging the gap between academia and industry, ensuring students gain practical exposure to real-world architectural challenges.
As a leader and advocate for the profession, she became the youngest woman to serve as Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) Odisha Chapter. She currently holds key positions as the IIA Eastern Zone Representative on the Council of Architecture and an Executive Committee Member of the Council of Architecture, Ministry of Education, Government of India. Beyond her professional practice, she actively contributes to shaping the architectural education landscape. As a Managing Committee Member of IIID Bhubaneswar Centre and a member of BIS, she continues to influence design standards and policy-making. Leadership has been a defining aspect of her journey. Over the years, she has been a prominent figure in the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), advocating for industry reforms, championing architects’ rights, and addressing critical policy issues. Having served as Treasurer for two terms, then as Vice Chairperson, and now as Chairperson of the IIA Odisha Chapter, she has been instrumental in strengthening the architectural community. Her voice has carried significant weight in media discussions and policy debates, bringing key architectural concerns to the national stage.
Her influence extends beyond Odisha, as she serves as a member of the Council of Architecture, New Delhi, representing the Eastern Zone. She holds the distinction of being the first young Odia woman architect to be Co-opted as an Executive Committee member of the Council of Architecture, Ministry of Education, Government of India. In this esteemed role, she actively contributes to shaping national architectural policies, ensuring the profession remains progressive, adaptive, and well-equipped to meet the evolving challenges of the industry.
