The Assembly was told on Wednesday by Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo that the Odisha government has no intentions to give 300 units of free power to customers. Singh Deo, who oversees the Energy portfolio, responded to a query from BJD lawmaker Sarada Prasad Nayak by saying that homes may lower their electricity costs by installing rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
The declaration follows accusations from the opposition that the BJP has not delivered on its electoral pledge to provide free power. Customers may build solar plants up to 3 kW in capacity with subsidies of Rs 78,000 from the Center and Rs 60,000 from the State, the Deputy CM explained. According to him, this might assist houses in producing about 300 units of solar electricity every month.
For the plan, the state has set aside Rs 1,800 crore over three years, beginning in 2024–2025. According to him, 3,124 homes had solar panels installed so far, and 97,128 people have applied. Singh Deo said that increasing the usage of solar energy will lessen load shedding and power shortages in the state.
