Paradip Port Achieves Record Cargo Handling Milestone.

FEATURE: Paradip Port has cemented its position as India’s top major port by handling an all-time high cargo throughput of 150.41 million metric tonnes (MMT) in the fiscal year 2024-25. This achievement marks a significant milestone, making Paradip Port a part of the exclusive 150 MMT Club despite challenges in the global trade market.

Unprecedented Growth in Cargo Handling

The port’s remarkable performance comes at a time when several key commodities, such as iron ore and coking coal, have seen a decline in export demand. However, Paradip Port has successfully navigated these challenges by focusing on coastal cargo, which contributed 42.36% of the total cargo volume. Coastal cargo handling saw a notable 7.65% year-on-year growth, reaching 63.71 MMT. This has positioned Paradip Port as the leading Indian port in coastal shipping.

Additionally, the port has experienced a 111% surge in containerized cargo movement, alongside a 32% increase in flux volume. These numbers highlight the port’s ability to adapt and expand its services despite changing market conditions.

Rail Connectivity and Operational Excellence

A significant factor behind Paradip Port’s success is its robust rail logistics system. The port handled an impressive 22,818 rakes during the year, marking a 5.32% increase compared to the previous year. Its rail-borne traffic reached 81.01 MMT, the highest among India’s major ports.

Operational efficiency remains a key strength, with Paradip Port maintaining its position as the number one port in berth productivity. The port achieved an average of 34,283 metric tonnes per day per berth, reinforcing its efficiency in handling high cargo volumes swiftly.

Future Expansion and Sustainability Efforts

Looking ahead, Paradip Port is undertaking ambitious infrastructure projects to further enhance its capacity. The construction of the 25 MMTPA Western Dock Project, led by M/s JPPL, is already underway, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2026. This expansion will significantly boost the port’s ability to manage larger shipments and accommodate growing trade demands.

In addition to expanding its cargo handling capacity, the port is also taking steps toward sustainable operations. Plans are in motion for a green hydrogen and ammonia export terminal, which will position Paradip Port as a leader in environmentally friendly shipping solutions. This initiative aligns with India’s broader push toward green energy and sustainable industrial growth.

Acknowledgment and Industry Collaboration

The remarkable success of Paradip Port is a result of collaborative efforts between various stakeholders. Chairman P. L. Haranadh has credited the achievement to the hard work and dedication of exporters, importers, port officials, staff unions, PPP operators, stevedores, and shipping agents. He also acknowledged the vital support provided by the Ministry of Railways, the Odisha Government, and the Department of Customs in facilitating smooth operations.

Paradip Port’s record-breaking cargo handling performance underscores its role as a crucial hub in India’s maritime trade. With ongoing infrastructure developments and a focus on sustainability, the port is well-positioned to continue its growth trajectory and maintain its leadership in the industry. As global trade evolves, Paradip Port is set to play an even more significant role in India’s economic progress.
