Lauren Sanchez Faces Backlash for Space Flight with Katy Perry: ‘Rich Woman Takes Celebrity Friends’

Pop star Katy Perry and Lauren Sanchez, fiancée of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, soared to the edge of space this Monday aboard a Blue Origin rocket, marking the first all-female spaceflight in over 60 years. While hailed by some as a milestone for women in aerospace, the mission faced significant backlash online over its perceived elitism and environmental impact.

The six-member crew included television host Gayle King, rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn. Though Blue Origin touted the flight as a symbol of progress and empowerment, critics quickly called it a “tone-deaf publicity stunt.”

Model and activist Emily Ratajkowski voiced strong opposition in a viral TikTok video, questioning the ethics of spending vast resources on a brief space joyride. “You’re going up in a spaceship built and paid for by a company that is single-handedly destroying the planet,” she said.

On social media, users echoed her concerns. “Why are we hyping up billionaire wives going to space for 6 minutes while people are starving?” one post read, while another likened the launch to a “Make a Wish stunt.”

After landing, Gayle King defended the mission, saying critics “don’t really understand what is happening here,” emphasizing the flight’s inspirational value for young women. Sanchez also addressed the backlash, saying Blue Origin’s mission is “for the benefit of Earth” and suggesting detractors speak with employees to grasp the deeper meaning.

Despite the criticism, the flight marks a high-profile chapter in the private space race — one now entangled with debates on privilege, purpose, and planetary responsibility.
