India’s Neurosurgical Luminary: Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra

Padma Shri, Former Chief, Neurosciences Centre, AIIMS New Delhi

FEATURE: Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra stands among India’s most distinguished medical professionals—a pioneering neurosurgeon whose contributions to clinical practice and medical education have profoundly shaped the nation’s healthcare landscape. A native of Odisha, his journey from MKCG Medical College in Berhampur to global recognition is a testament to relentless dedication, academic brilliance, and an unwavering commitment to the service of humanity.

After completing his MBBS in 1975, he pursued postgraduate training at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, earning his MS in Surgery in 1979 and M.Ch. in Neurosurgery in 1982. In 1983, he also attained a DNB in Neurosurgery, laying the foundation for a career that would redefine neurosurgical standards in India. Over a four-decade-long association with AIIMS, he held several pivotal roles—including Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Chief of the Neurosciences Centre, and Dean of Research.

Dr. Mahapatra’s surgical expertise earned international acclaim in 2017, when he led a 16-hour operation to separate conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia—an extraordinary case of craniopagus twins joined at the head. The complex procedure, conducted at AIIMS New Delhi, was the first successful surgery of its kind in India and was later chronicled in the Limca Book of Records. His pioneering work spans pediatric neurosurgery, head trauma, skull base surgery, neural transplantation, and intracranial tumors. With more than 600 research publications and over 15 authored books, he has made a lasting academic contribution to the field.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Mahapatra has played a transformative role in institution-building and academic leadership. As the founding Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, he established the institute’s clinical and academic foundations. He also served as Director of the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, further reinforcing his commitment to excellence in medical education. In recent years, he has held key academic leadership positions at Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) in Bhubaneswar, first as Vice-Chancellor and currently as Principal Advisor (Health Sciences), where he continues to guide healthcare education and research.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to medicine, Dr. Mahapatra was conferred the Padma Shri by the Hon’ble President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in April 2025. He was also honoured with the C.V. Raman Award for Scientific Excellence by the Odisha Bigyan Academy in 2022. SOA Founder President Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak felicitated him on receiving the national honour, lauding his impact on the medical fraternity and his enduring legacy.

Today, Prof. (Dr.) Mahapatra is widely regarded as one of the top five neurosurgeons in the world—a rare combination of surgical precision, academic vision, and compassionate leadership. His life’s work has not only saved lives in the operating theatre but also shaped the future of Indian healthcare through research, mentorship, and visionary institutional development. His legacy stands as a beacon for generations to come, setting a benchmark in the pursuit of medical excellence.
