Leading Odisha’s Industrial Renaissance with Heart and Hustle: Mr. Tarini Prasad Mohanty

Vice President, Utkal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (UCCIL)

Feature: In the heart of Odisha’s mineral-rich Keonjhar district, where the earth hides treasures of iron and manganese, one man has built more than just a business — he has built a legacy. Mr. Tarini Prasad Mohanty, entrepreneur, industrial leader, and cultural advocate, has spent nearly two decades transforming his dream into reality. From the rugged mines of Joda to the boardrooms of Bhubaneswar, Mr. Mohanty has emerged as a driving force in shaping the state’s industrial future while keeping its cultural heritage alive.

Over the past 18 years, he has turned T.P. Mohanty Mines from a modest contracting firm into a leading player in Odisha’s mining sector. His rise is a testament to perseverance and vision — a vision that now extends far beyond mining, touching nearly every aspect of Odisha’s development story.

Mr. Mohanty’s beginnings were humble yet determined. Starting out as a contractor with Odisha Mining Corporation, he immersed himself in the intricacies of mining operations and gained first-hand experience of the challenges and opportunities in the sector. His persistence eventually led him to acquire his own iron and manganese mines, fulfilling a long-cherished dream. Today, T.P. Mohanty Mines stands as a symbol of sustainable mining practices, with Mr. Mohanty championing technologies like wet drilling and dust-suppression systems to reduce environmental impact. These efforts reflect his belief that industrial growth and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand.

But Mr. Mohanty’s ambitions reach far beyond the mining belt. He is the dynamic Vice President of the Utkal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCIL), Odisha’s largest and most influential industrial body, representing over 900 companies — from giants like Tata Steel, JSW, and JSPL to thriving MSMEs. During his tenure, Mr. Mohanty has played a pivotal role in connecting industry with policymakers and driving collaborative initiatives. One of his landmark achievements was spearheading the Mega Industrial Show, “Resurgent Odisha 2024,” a three-day global trade exposition that drew international participation and put Odisha on the global business map. The event became a platform for showcasing the state’s strengths in manufacturing, IT, AI, and renewable energy, reinforcing Mr. Mohanty’s belief that Odisha is poised to become an industrial powerhouse.

Known for his approachable leadership style, Mr. Mohanty has earned respect across business and government circles. Whether speaking with a miner in Joda or a senior bureaucrat in Bhubaneswar, he is known to treat everyone with the same respect and consideration. His open-door policy and willingness to engage with people from all walks of life have made him a bridge-builder in the truest sense — someone who can rally diverse stakeholders toward a shared goal of development.

What sets Mr. Mohanty apart is his holistic view of progress. Beyond industry, he is a staunch advocate of preserving Odisha’s cultural and traditional identity. He actively supports initiatives in handlooms, handicrafts, and tourism, recognizing that economic development should not come at the cost of cultural erosion. His interest in Odisha’s famed Pattachitra paintings and other crafts is a testament to his commitment to sustaining the state’s unique heritage while pushing it toward a modern future.

Perhaps one of the most exciting chapters of Mr. Mohanty’s journey is his foray into the world of sports. In 2024, he acquired Team Gonasika, a franchise in the prestigious Hockey India League (HIL). For Mr. Mohanty, hockey is more than a sport — it is a cultural pillar for Odisha, a state that has produced some of India’s finest players. The team’s name pays homage to the sacred Gonasika river in Keonjhar, symbolizing Mr. Mohanty’s deep-rooted connection to his land. Though the team plays under the Visakhapatnam banner, its spirit and identity remain tied to Odisha’s hockey heritage. Featuring several players from the state, Team Gonasika represents a new platform for nurturing local talent and inspiring the next generation of athletes. Mr. Mohanty’s vision for the team is not merely about winning championships but about rekindling Odisha’s passion for hockey and reinforcing its reputation as India’s hockey cradle.

As he now campaigns for the presidency of UCCIL, Mr. Mohanty is preparing to dedicate his undivided energy toward accelerating the Chamber’s growth and amplifying its role as a driver of Odisha’s development. His vision for a “New Odisha, Developed Odisha” is backed by strategic dialogues with industry leaders and government officials aimed at creating sustainable employment, fostering MSME growth, and bringing international investment to the state. Unlike some of his contemporaries, whose professional or political commitments may divide their attention, Mr. Mohanty is fully invested in UCCIL’s mission — with his family managing his other ventures, he has pledged to devote himself to the Chamber’s future.

Mr. Mohanty’s journey from the rugged mines of Keonjhar to the helm of Odisha’s premier industry chamber is nothing short of inspirational. It is a story of grit, innovation, and a deep love for his state. His work embodies a rare blend of business acumen and cultural stewardship — ensuring that Odisha’s march toward industrial prosperity does not lose sight of its soul. As an entrepreneur, leader, and cultural advocate, Mr. Tarini Prasad Mohanty is shaping a future where industry, culture, and community rise together. With him at the helm, Odisha’s growth story looks not only promising but boundless.
