With daily highs of 35°C in some areas, Odisha is already feeling the effects of the early arrival of extreme heat. With a high temperature of 36.8°C on Saturday, Jharsuguda was the hottest place in the state, followed by Bhubaneswar with 35.8°C. Sambalpur reported 36.6°C, Hirakud 36.4°C, Sonepur 35.9°C, Sundargarh and Titilagarh 35.8°C, Angul 35.7°C, Chandbali 35.8°C, Talcher and Rourkela 35.4°C, and Balangir and Bhadrak 35°C.
The next summer will be more severe than it was last year, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Following the release of the March monthly forecast and the all-India hot weather season projection (March to May) in New Delhi, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that Odisha is quite likely to see an increase in the number of heatwave days, especially in April and May.
Although the severity would be higher in the western interior regions than in coastal areas, Mohapatra predicts above-normal temperatures and heatwave conditions throughout Odisha. He emphasized that any brief respite would probably be linked to thunderstorm activity and that March daytime temperatures in the state will be average or below normal.
The majority of India, including Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and other regions in the northwest, west-central, and peninsular regions, are predicted by the IMD to have above-normal heatwave days between March and May. Additionally, it emphasized possible threats to electricity demand, water supplies, public health, and vital services, particularly for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and outdoor laborers.
The regional Met office’s extended-range prognosis for the next two weeks indicates that, through March 5 (February 27–March 5), maximum daily temperatures will probably be between 34°C and 36°C in a few north interior districts and between 32°C and 34°C elsewhere in the state. From March 6 to 12, temperatures are predicted to soar, reaching daily highs of 36°C to 38°C in interior regions and 34°C to 36°C across the remainder of the state.
