Delhi Govt Cancels ₹6.2 Crore VIP Boat Plan; Probe Ordered, Two Engineers Suspended
The Delhi government has scrapped its proposal to procure two luxury air-conditioned boats for VIPs and VVIPs, estimated at ₹6.2 crore, and suspended two senior engineers over the tendering process, minister Parvesh Verma said on Thursday.
The move comes a day after a report highlighted the procurement plans, prompting the minister to order an inquiry into the tenders and the circumstances under which they were issued. Verma, who heads the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department, confirmed that the tender has been cancelled and disciplinary action taken against the executive engineer and assistant engineer for proceeding without prior approval.
According to officials, future procurement of boats will now be restricted strictly to essential departmental functions such as surveillance, pollution monitoring, and other operational needs.
The earlier tender proposed two high-end vessels with a capacity of 16–20 الأشخاص each, featuring rooftop marine air conditioners, business-class-style seating, a pantry, and an open rear deck with sofa seating designed for public appearances. The interiors were to include premium finishes, vegan leather seats, and ambient lighting.
The plan had drawn criticism from opposition parties including the Aam Aadmi Party and the Indian National Congress, which termed it a misuse of public funds and a reflection of misplaced priorities.
The tender process, which had already been extended citing administrative reasons, has now been formally cancelled as the probe continues.
