The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that extensive rainfall is expected throughout the state due to a cyclonic circulation that is still present over south coastal Odisha and neighboring north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The system, which is situated around 3.1 km above mean sea level, is affecting the weather over eastern India and is anticipated to facilitate the monsoon’s active development in the days ahead.
The southwest monsoon is also expected to the next four to five days into a number of areas in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and portions of southern Chhattisgarh, according to the IMD’s midday weather bulletin. On June 16, 2026, the IMD predicted mild to moderate rain or thunderstorms in several locations in all 30 districts of Odisha.
Districts expected to be affected include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh. Rain is also likely at isolated places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
For numerous areas the meteorological service has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds. Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh are among the places where a yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusts, as well as hot and muggy weather. Residents have been urged by the IMD to stay vigilant, especially in areas where thunderstorm activity and strong winds are predicted.
