Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s homegrown dairy brand OMFED is looking beyond its traditional milk and dairy portfolio as it explores new consumer categories, including packaged drinking water and an expanded range of ice creams.
The Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED) is considering the introduction of packaged drinking water while simultaneously working towards strengthening its ice-cream portfolio with additional flavours. The proposals are subject to necessary approvals, according to reports.
From Dairy Cooperative to Consumer Brand
For decades, OMFED has been one of Odisha’s most recognisable household brands, building its identity around milk and dairy products such as curd, paneer, ghee, butter, sweets and ice cream.
Its potential entry into packaged drinking water would therefore represent an interesting diversification beyond its conventional dairy territory.
Rather than building consumer recognition from scratch, OMFED has the advantage of an established brand name, distribution presence and longstanding association with households across Odisha.
Ice Cream Portfolio Set for a Refresh
Alongside the proposed packaged-water venture, OMFED is also looking at strengthening its ice-cream business through a broader selection of flavours.
The move could help the cooperative compete for a larger share of the increasingly competitive frozen-dessert and ice-cream market, where national and regional brands are continuously expanding their product portfolios.
For OMFED, a refreshed ice-cream range could also help the legacy brand strengthen its connection with younger consumers while retaining the trust it has built among generations of customers.
Why the Brand Expansion Matters
The development signals an important evolution in OMFED’s brand strategy — from being predominantly perceived as a dairy cooperative to potentially becoming a broader consumer-products brand.
Diversification into adjacent categories can allow established brands to leverage consumer trust, distribution capabilities and existing retail relationships. However, success will ultimately depend on product quality, pricing, availability and OMFED’s ability to differentiate itself in highly competitive categories.
For Odisha, the expansion of a homegrown cooperative brand also carries wider significance. A stronger OMFED can potentially create greater value across the dairy ecosystem while demonstrating how established regional brands can evolve with changing consumer preferences.
An Odisha Brand Preparing for Its Next Chapter
As national FMCG companies intensify their presence across Tier-II and Tier-III markets, regional brands are increasingly being challenged to innovate while protecting the local trust that made them successful.
OMFED’s proposed expansion offers an interesting example of that transition.
From the familiar milk pouch in Odisha households to potentially competing across a wider consumer basket, OMFED appears to be preparing for the next chapter of its brand journey.
