Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to strengthen its position in India’s emerging semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem with the approval of a ₹3,406.25-crore semiconductor manufacturing project by SiCSem Private Limited near Bhubaneswar. The project has been approved by the Unit Approval Committee (UAC) of the Falta Special Economic Zone (FSEZ) and will be established at IDCO Info Valley-II in Arisol Mouza, Jatni tehsil, Khordha district.
Spread across 21.889 acres, the proposed facility will focus on the manufacturing of silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor devices, particularly SiC diodes and SiC MOSFETs. The facility is planned as an integrated manufacturing unit covering key stages of the production chain, including fabrication, assembly, testing, marking and packaging.
The proposed plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 4.8 million SiC diodes and 91.2 million SiC MOSFETs. Silicon carbide-based devices are increasingly important for power electronics and applications that require high efficiency and performance under demanding operating conditions. They have applications across areas such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, industrial equipment and advanced power systems.
Beyond manufacturing, the project is expected to create around 1,270 employment opportunities, adding to the pool of skilled jobs emerging around Odisha’s electronics and semiconductor sector. The facility is also projected to generate an export turnover of approximately ₹7,043 crore over the next five years, with estimated Net Foreign Exchange earnings of about ₹4,523 crore during the same period.
The SiCSem project is also significant in the context of Odisha’s broader efforts to build a semiconductor ecosystem rather than attract isolated manufacturing investments. The state has been positioning locations such as Info Valley as destinations for high-technology and electronics manufacturing, with semiconductor projects expected to bring investment, skilled employment, research activity and supporting industries to the region.
SiCSem has also established the Silicon Carbide Research and Innovation Centre (SICRIC) at IIT Bhubaneswar, with an investment of ₹64 crore, creating a link between industrial manufacturing and research in silicon carbide technology.
The approval comes as India expands its semiconductor ambitions under the India Semiconductor Mission, with greater emphasis on domestic manufacturing capabilities, advanced packaging, materials, research and development. For Odisha, the SiCSem investment adds another major project to the state’s growing semiconductor pipeline and strengthens its efforts to emerge as a hub for advanced technology and export-oriented manufacturing.
