Chandrabhanu Bhuyan on education, perseverance, competitive examinations and shaping the aspirations of India’s youth

By Aishwarya Kanungo | Interview Times

Some institutions are established to prepare students for examinations; others are built around a larger purpos to make educational opportunities accessible and empower individuals to realise their potential. The story of Quest Institution, founded in 2007, reflects this vision: that talent can emerge from anywhere, and with the right guidance, discipline and determination, aspirations can become achievements.

For Chandrabhanu Bhuyan, Founder and Managing Director of Quest Institution, the journey began with a commitment to providing quality competitive-examination training, particularly for students from rural backgrounds aspiring to build careers in India’s banking and insurance sectors. What started in a modest rented room has grown into an institution focused on classroom education, student mentorship and digital learning.

In an exclusive conversation with Interview Times, Bhuyan shared the story behind Quest, its educational philosophy, the evolving competitive-examination landscape and the lessons he believes today’s generation must embrace to build a meaningful future.

Quest’s journey began in 2007 with just 50 students in a rented room measuring approximately 100 square feet. According to Bhuyan, 48 of those students were subsequently selected for positions at the State Bank of India (SBI). This early achievement strengthened his conviction that quality guidance, structured preparation and consistent effort could transform students’ aspirations into tangible opportunities.

The institution continued to expand, reaching approximately 1,600 students across 19 batches during 2017–18. The COVID-19 pandemic subsequently brought significant changes to the competitive-examination preparation sector, challenging traditional teaching models and accelerating the shift towards digital learning.

Today, Quest continues to operate its offline classes while extending its reach through online training initiatives. Bhuyan stated that its digital training activities have reached approximately 2.5 lakh learners across different organisations in a year. The institution also undertakes free training initiatives, including promotional recruitment tests and pre-examination assessments.

For Bhuyan, this journey represents more than institutional growth. It reflects an ongoing commitment to widening access to education and helping aspiring candidates move closer to their professional goals.

Comprehensive Coaching for Competitive Examinations

Quest Institution offers coaching for Banking, SSC, Railway, OSSC, SI, ASO and OPSC examinations, catering to students aspiring to enter banking, government services and other public-sector careers.

Its approach emphasises strengthening fundamental concepts before progressing towards intensive practice and examination-oriented preparation. Classroom instruction, assignments, study resources and practical exercises form important parts of the learning process.

Bhuyan believes that successful preparation requires more than memorising concepts or completing a syllabus. Students must develop analytical ability, consistency, time management and the confidence to perform under examination pressure.

By combining structured learning with sustained practice, Quest seeks to help students build the academic foundation and discipline necessary to navigate competitive examinations.

Beyond Classrooms: Building a Culture of Discipline

At Quest, the learning process extends beyond classroom lectures. Bhuyan emphasises the importance of maintaining a disciplined routine, developing strong fundamentals and creating an environment conducive to focused study.

The institution operates four libraries, open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. every day except August 15 and January 26. Although Quest does not operate its own hostels, it assists students in finding accommodation in nearby hostels, generally within 500 metres to one kilometre of its facilities.

These arrangements are intended to make students’ preparation more convenient while encouraging independent study and regular practice.

For Bhuyan, discipline is not simply about following a timetable; it is about developing habits that sustain learning over the long term.

Quality Over Appearances: The Quest Philosophy

In an increasingly competitive coaching industry, institutions often distinguish themselves through infrastructure, advertising and promises of results. Bhuyan, however, places greater emphasis on teaching quality, faculty involvement and student support.

According to him, the three directors themselves conduct a substantial proportion of the classes, enabling them to remain directly involved in students’ academic development. The institution also arranges interview-preparation sessions featuring experienced professionals and subject experts.

For candidates aspiring to enter the banking and insurance sectors, the interview stage can be as demanding as the written examination. Quest therefore incorporates expert guidance and recorded panel interviews, drawing on the experience of banking professionals and specialists associated with organisations such as LIC, United India Insurance and SBI.

Bhuyan also highlighted the institution’s efforts to make education more accessible through fee concessions for deserving candidates from below-poverty-line families.

His philosophy is straightforward: the true value of an educational institution lies not merely in its external appearance, but in the quality of teaching, guidance and opportunities it provides.

Taking Education Beyond Geographical Boundaries

For students from rural areas, accessing quality coaching can be challenging because of geographical distance, financial limitations and limited educational resources. Quest seeks to address these barriers through digital learning initiatives and the distribution of study materials.

Students in remote areas of Odisha and elsewhere can receive printed study materials through courier services. The institution also provides structured learning resources and assignments to support systematic preparation.

Bhuyan believes that geographical location should not determine a student’s access to educational opportunities. With appropriate guidance, study materials and consistent effort, students from different backgrounds can work towards their career ambitions.

This commitment to accessibility reflects the broader purpose behind Quest’s establishment: helping students overcome barriers and pursue opportunities that might otherwise remain beyond their reach.

Navigating the Changing Competitive-Examination Landscape

The competitive-examination sector has changed significantly in recent years. The expansion of online education has created new opportunities for learners, while also intensifying competition between digital platforms and traditional classroom-based institutions.

Bhuyan observed that the period following the COVID-19 pandemic brought considerable changes in students’ learning preferences. With numerous online courses available at varying prices, aspirants must evaluate the quality, structure and effectiveness of the preparation they choose.

For institutions such as Quest, the challenge is to adapt to changing expectations while maintaining consistent teaching standards.

Bhuyan believes that effective preparation depends on experienced faculty, structured learning, regular assignments and sustained practice, irrespective of whether classes take place online or offline.

Ultimately, he suggests, students should look beyond promotional claims and focus on the quality of learning that genuinely supports their preparation.

Failure Is Not the End

One of the most significant aspects of Bhuyan’s philosophy concerns the emotional challenges faced by competitive-examination aspirants.

Government recruitment examinations often attract large numbers of applicants for a limited number of vacancies. Students may spend several years preparing without achieving their desired results, and repeated setbacks can affect their confidence and motivation.

Bhuyan believes that no individual should be defined as a failure simply because one particular career path does not work out.

He encourages students to recognise their strengths, understand their circumstances and identify opportunities that align with their abilities and interests. A setback in one field does not eliminate the possibility of success in another.

He also emphasises the importance of mental resilience and positive thinking. Competitive examinations demand persistence, but aspirants must also learn to cope with uncertainty and make informed decisions about their futures.

For Bhuyan, failure should be an opportunity to reassess one’s direction rather than a permanent judgement of one’s potential.

Plan A or Plan B: Where Should Students Focus?

When asked whether students should prepare a backup plan while pursuing their primary ambition, Bhuyan advocated giving Plan A complete attention during the initial one to two years before reconsidering alternatives if necessary.

His advice highlights the importance of commitment and avoiding unnecessary distractions during the early stages of preparation.

At the same time, his broader philosophy recognises that career decisions must align with individual abilities, interests and financial circumstances. The choice between government employment and private-sector opportunities should be based on a realistic understanding of one’s goals rather than social pressure or popular trends.

For Bhuyan, clarity of purpose and consistent effort remain essential, regardless of the career path a student chooses.

A Message to Gen Z: Balance Ambition with Discipline

In an age of constant notifications, digital distractions and pressure to achieve success quickly, Bhuyan’s advice to young people is refreshingly simple.

He recommends dividing the day into three balanced parts: eight hours for sleep, eight hours for study and eight hours for enjoying life. This approach reflects his belief that ambition should be supported by a sustainable routine that allows time for rest, personal development and recreation.

Bhuyan also stresses the importance of improving English-language skills, particularly for students from vernacular-medium backgrounds. For aspirants who are comfortable with mathematics but less confident in English, he recommends listening to English cricket commentary, reading newspapers such as The Times of India or The Hindu, and watching English-language educational content.

Rather than treating language proficiency as an overnight achievement, he encourages students to build confidence through regular exposure and consistent practice.

His message to Gen Z is clear: discipline, effective time management and a willingness to learn can help bridge the gap between present limitations and future aspirations.

The Story Behind the Name Quest

Even the institution’s name carries a story. Bhuyan explained that it was inspired by an independent programme titled Quest for Truth, which he watched during the Olympic and Asian Games.

The word quest represents a search for knowledge, understanding and something meaningful. In the context of education, it reflects the journey students undertake as they discover their abilities, overcome obstacles and work towards their ambitions.

For Quest Institution, this idea extends beyond clearing examinations. It represents the pursuit of knowledge, personal growth and opportunities that can shape a student’s future.

The People Behind the Institution

Quest’s journey has also been shaped by the professional backgrounds and commitment of its leadership team.

Bhuyan shared that he cleared competitive examinations at the age of 18 and cleared the Services Selection Board (SSB) process before establishing Quest at the age of 28. His two fellow directors hold M.Tech degrees and left assistant-officer positions in the electrical and electronics fields to dedicate themselves to the institution.

Their decision reflects a shared commitment to education and the belief that mentoring aspiring candidates can create a lasting impact.

For Bhuyan, the institution’s purpose extends beyond examination results and employment outcomes. It is equally about helping students develop confidence, discipline and the ability to make informed decisions about their lives.

News Over Noise: A Philosophy for the Future

At the heart of Bhuyan’s message is a call for young people to remain focused on what genuinely matters. In an environment filled with distractions, comparisons and pressure to succeed, he encourages students to prioritise meaningful learning over unnecessary noise.

His guiding principles are determination, devotion and dedication. He also urges young people to ask themselves an important question: What am I doing for others?

This question introduces a wider dimension to the meaning of success. Professional achievement, in his view, becomes more meaningful when accompanied by a sense of responsibility towards others.

From its beginnings in a modest rented room to its present combination of classroom education and digital training, Quest’s journey demonstrates what sustained effort and a clear sense of purpose can help build.

For Chandrabhanu Bhuyan, the ultimate goal is not merely to prepare students for examinations, but to equip them with the discipline, confidence and perspective needed to navigate life’s challenges.

As Quest continues its journey, its founding philosophy remains relevant: education becomes truly transformative when it creates opportunities, strengthens individuals and encourages them to look beyond personal success.

Because the real measure of an institution is not simply how many students it prepares for an examination, but how effectively it prepares them for the opportunities and challenges that lie beyond it.

Quest Institution offers coaching for Banking, SSC, Railway, OSSC, SI, ASO and OPSC examinations.
