Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim singh and four others were sentenced to life imprisonment by special CBI for the murder of sect manager Ranjit Singh in 2002.
According to the reports, Ram Rahim Singh who was in 2017 sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping two disciples is currently lodged in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail. Singh is also serving life imprisonment for murdering journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.
Further a fine of Rs 31 Lakh has also been levied on Ram Singh and Rs 50,000 on the remaining accused along with 50 per cent of the fine collected will be given to the victim’s family.
The report further added Dera chief had requested the court for leniency and in his plea, Ram Singh mentioned the philanthropic work he has done in the past. Ranjit Singh, who is a resident of Khanpur Kolian village in Kurukshetra who was a follower of Dera, was shot dead on July 10, 2002. Later there was a rift between the two. A case in connection to the murder was lodged at the Sadar police station in Thanesar, Kurukshetra. The CBI took over the probe in 2003 and filed a charge sheet in July, 2007.
On October 8, 2021, a CBI court convicted Singh and four others – Sabdil Singh, Krishan Lal, Avtar Singh and Jasbir Singh – in this case.
