Ever since the trailer of Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui landed, there’s been a lot of secrecy around the film’s plot. The trailer gave us a hint but kept most of it under wraps. While we’re used to seeing Ayushmann Khurrana take up films based on taboo subjects, this time, it is Vaani Kapoor, who has taken the plunge and dived deep into uncharted waters. The film doesn’t lose sight of what is important and hence, little flaws here and there are easily ignored.

Created on a rom-com template, the film entertains in parts. The first half fails to engage you as you wait for that big moment, which arrives a tad too late and is a bit of a damp squib.

The sensitive message, which the film strives to convey, is not handled as well as it could have been. By the end, it almost feels as if with all the boxes having been ticked by the director, he is in a hurry to wrap up the film with an ‘all’s well that ends well’ stamp.

The dialogues are replete with the local Punjabi flavour and even crass in parts. The music is nothing to write home about, and it is only ‘Mainu maafi de de maafi’ that is well-picturised and melodious.

Ayushmann Khurrana is known for making films which are considered taboo in Indian society. Whether it be Badhaai Ho, Subh Mangal Savdhan, Dream Girl, Bala, Subh Mangal Zyada Savdhan or even his debut film Vicky Donor, he always tries to deliver a strong message in his flicks in a witty way.

However in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui neither is wit is up to the mark nor the message is deeply rooted. The flick could have been better if the story line could have been detailed to 30 minutes more. However, its worth a one time watch.
