After months of delays, NASA’s Artemis 1 mission launched successfully from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday. NASA broadcast the event live on its various social media accounts and posted short clips on Twitter. One of these videos shows the spectacular image of Earth captured by the spaceship Orion while it was attached to the rocket’s top on its way to orbit the Moon. The Space Launch System (SLS) launched at 01:47 a.m. (local time) with a record 8.8 million pounds of thrust.
NASA posted footage of Earth taken by the spacecraft on the Artemis mission’s Twitter account. “As @NASA Orion prepares to launch the #Artemis I mission to the Moon, the spacecraft captured these stunning views of our home planet,” the tweet text said.
The Earth recedes behind the rocket, which is travelling at over 22,600 mph (36,370 kmph) to propel the Orion spacecraft to the Moon.
“Now we’re going back to the Moon, not just to go back to the Moon, but to learn how to live on the Moon in order to prepare to send humans all the way to Mars,” NASA administrator Bill Nelson said at a press conference following the launch.
