Shanti Lakra, 37, said: “We have never ridden a motorcycle, but now we use a HEMM.” He said that women destroy patriarchal rule in mining and perform tasks that require endurance and mental flexibility. According to JSW Steel (Odisha Division of Mines), nine female HEMM operators are currently working at the Jajang mine in Keonjhar, while 32 others are undergoing training.
“They fully proved themselves and used their physical skills and mental strength in their performance,” said a company official, adding, “These candidates underwent intensive training to improve their skills as HEMM operators. After training, these women will be posted as sub. -operators. They use a dump truck, a bulldozer, a shovel and a drill.” Taking the opportunity to use HEMM will definitely boost their confidence to aim higher. Santi Lakra, 37, feels that entering and succeeding in a male-dominated field has redefined her self-esteem.
