In the midst of a heated blame game between Delhi’s AAP and Haryana’s BJP administration over the unprecedented flood scenario in the national capital, portions of Delhi were tormented by flooded roads and a lack of drinking water. Although Delhi’s ITO is still underwater on Saturday morning, the Yamuna flood that invaded the city on Thursday started to recede on Friday night. BJP’s Amit Malviya said that while Army engineers completed all the work, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal just tweeted to claim credit. Kejriwal congratulated the Army Engineer unit for opening the ITO barrage after working for 20 hours straight.
In a video it posted on Friday, the AAP claimed that the BJP administration in Haryana had dried up the Uttar Pradesh side of the Hathnikund barrage while diverting all the water to Delhi.
The Haryana government said that the assertion was false since the CWC guidelines prohibited water from being streamed into the Western Yamuna and Eastern Yamuna Canals (the other channels outside of Delhi) if the volume was greater than 1 lakh cubic seconds. Devendra Singh, a former IAS who advises Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, claimed that there is nothing contentious about it and that a needless controversy is being generated about it.
The water level of Yamuna witnessed a steady decline and was recorded at 207,98 metres at 11pm on Friday at the Old Railway Bridge.
