A Bigger Bet on GIFT City

One of Wall Street’s biggest names is preparing to significantly deepen its presence in India’s emerging global financial hub.

JPMorgan Chase plans to double its GIFT City business over the next couple of years, according to Max Neukirchen, the bank’s Global Co-Head of Payments. Its operations at the Gujarat hub already serve a few hundred clients, while people familiar with the business put its current book at close to $1 billion. JPMorgan itself has not publicly confirmed the size of that book.

The planned expansion will extend across trade finance, foreign exchange, liquidity and payment solutions, strengthening the bank’s position in India’s only International Financial Services Centre.

From 2022 Entry to a $1-Billion-Scale Business

JPMorgan inaugurated its International Banking Unit at GIFT IFSC in July 2022, describing the branch as a platform for facilitating cross-border flows through fixed-income, foreign-exchange, commodities, debt and capital-market solutions.

Four years later, that operation has developed into a substantially larger franchise.

The bank currently provides GIFT City clients with services spanning loans, risk management, working-capital financing, investments, foreign exchange and other markets products. JPMorgan appointed senior executive Amit Roy to lead the GIFT City branch in June 2026.

The expansion comes as multinational companies increasingly examine GIFT City for corporate treasury and cross-border financial operations. Recent reporting says more than 100 multinational companies had approached JPMorgan to explore banking and payment solutions for treasury operations over a 12–18 month period.

Why GIFT City Matters

Gujarat International Finance Tec-City was created to establish an international financial-services ecosystem within India.

Its IFSC encompasses banking, capital markets, insurance, fund management, fintech, aircraft and ship leasing and other financial activities. GIFT City says more than 1,000 entities are operational there, with total banking assets exceeding $100 billion as of September 2025.

JPMorgan’s official GIFT City material says its banking unit serves overseas subsidiaries and joint ventures of Indian companies, multinational entities, financial institutions, corporates and other institutional clients.

That makes the hub particularly relevant to companies seeking to manage international capital, foreign currencies and cross-border transactions from India.

The $1 Billion Number Tells the Story

For our feature, this should be the central visual statistic:

~$1 BILLION
JPMorgan’s reported current GIFT City business book

2X
Targeted business growth over the next couple of years

FEW HUNDRED

2022
Year JPMorgan opened its GIFT City branch

The close-to-$1-billion figure comes from people familiar with the business rather than an official disclosure from JPMorgan, so the poster should describe it as a reported business book rather than a confirmed company figure.

More Than Another Bank Expansion

The larger story is what JPMorgan’s move says about GIFT City.

International financial centres depend on more than buildings and regulatory frameworks. Their significance ultimately rests on whether major global institutions choose to conduct meaningful business through them.

A decision by a global bank to expand trade finance, forex, liquidity and payments therefore provides another data point in GIFT City’s attempt to develop into a larger cross-border financial-services centre.

For JPMorgan, meanwhile, GIFT City forms only one part of a much broader Indian footprint. The bank says its physical presence in India dates to 1945, while its major centres in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad support global operations.

India Moves Deeper Into Global Finance

The next phase will be important.

If JPMorgan succeeds in doubling its GIFT City business, the expansion would strengthen the relationship between one of the world’s largest financial institutions and India’s flagship international finance centre.

The headline, therefore, is bigger than the expansion of one banking branch.

Wall Street is increasing its exposure to an Indian financial hub designed to bring more global financial activity onto Indian soil — and JPMorgan’s next phase at GIFT City provides a closely watched test of that ambition.
