Asim Munir Trolled Online After Promotion to Field Marshal Sparks Controversy in Pakistan

General Asim Munir’s recent promotion to the rank of Field Marshal has ignited a storm of criticism and ridicule online, with many questioning the move amid Pakistan’s recent military setbacks and perceived leadership failures.

The Government of Pakistan officially announced Munir’s elevation — making him only the second military officer in the country’s history to achieve this rank after Ayub Khan in 1959. The Prime Minister’s Office credited the promotion to Munir’s “high strategy and courageous leadership” in ensuring national security and defeating the enemy during the recent conflict with India.

However, social media users were quick to express skepticism and mockery. Critics slammed the decision, alleging that Munir had failed to protect key airbases during India’s Operation Sindoor and questioned how a leader presiding over such losses could be rewarded with the country’s highest military rank.

Many users on X (formerly Twitter) accused Munir of “promoting himself,” likening him to the de facto power center in Pakistan behind a civilian government façade. One viral post joked, “Asim Munir elevated himself to the rank of Field Marshal. Clown country.” Others shared a satirical Bollywood clip of actor Nana Patekar performing a self-puja, comparing it to Munir’s apparent self-congratulatory promotion.

Another pointed jab came from a user referencing reports that Munir had taken cover in a bunker during the recent conflict: “After his promotion, Asim Munir is now entitled to a bigger, more spacious bunker.”

Popular Indian singer Adnan Sami also joined in, posting a meme from a Bollywood film that shows a character addressing animals while promising to protect their rights — a clear jab at Munir’s symbolic authority.

One of the most biting comments read, “Asim Munir has actually been promoted to Failed Marshal, not Field Marshal. Only a failure can receive such a promotion.”

The announcement came shortly after a May 10 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, ending a brief but intense period of cross-border hostilities.

While the government hails Munir’s leadership, online sentiment paints a starkly different picture — one of distrust, satire, and public frustration.
