Official renamings of Aurangabad and Osmanabad are Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv, respectively. The proposal was accepted on Friday and the central government’s “no objection” to the renaming of the two cities in Maharashtra was stated by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, tweeted the information. While Osmanabad was given its name in honour of a 20th-century king of the Hyderabad princely state, Aurangabad takes its name from the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
The second ruler of the Maratha kingdom established by his father was Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the eldest son of the warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. By Aurangzeb’s instructions, Sambhaji Maharaj was put to death in 1689. According to some researchers, the cave system known as Dharashiv, which is close to Osmanabad, dates to the eighth century.Bal Thackeray, the late Shiv Sena leader, was the first to call for the renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad. For many years, the founder of the Shiv Sena raised this demand.Imtiaz Jaleel, an AIMIM MP from Aurangabad, responded to the announcement by saying, “Aurangabad is, was, and will always be our city. Watch for our strength display for Aurangabad right now. A huge protest for our cherished city! Prepare to confront these forces (the BJP) playing politics in the name of our city, Aurangabadis. We detest and will fight.
