All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) became the first hospital in Odisha to implant a micro leadless pacemaker in a patient’s heart.
As per the report, the leadless pacemaker is a miniaturised heart devises with the most advanced pacing technology, and this tiny machine is inserted directly into the heart, unlike regular pacemakers implanted just below the skin on the chest.
Debashis Acharya, who is a cardiologist and electro-physiologist doctor, performed the surgery along with Doctor Debashis Dash. When the patient had a problem implanting conventional pacemaker due to arrhythmia, then leadless pacemaker was later implanted successfully.
Debashis Acharya stated that among all the newly established AIIMS, the doctors have successfully carried out the implantation of a leadless pacemaker for the first time in Odisha. Due to the patient’s severe condition, the implantation of conventional pacemaker couldn’t take place due to which leadless pacemaker was implanted later.
The report further stated that generally, the leadless pacemaker implantation costs around 10 Lakh to 12 Lakh but AIIMS has carried out the implantation with the concession to the patient.
Acharya further said the implantation process was successful and the patient’s condition is stable after the implantation. The leadless pacemaker is a small device which is about 93% smaller than other pacemakers, and it does not need external wires or leads to reach the right ventricle.
