The Narendra Modi-led government has found itself in a fight with billionaire financier-philanthropist George Soros as the Adani-Hindenburg scandal continues. The 92-year-old had previously predicted that the issues at the business would “seriously weaken Modi’s stronghold on India’s federal government.” The BJP quickly responded by claiming that Soros wanted to “destroy” Indian democracy and had “hand-picked” a few individuals to lead the country.
After billionaire investor George Soros predicted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would “have to answer questions” as a result of Indian business tycoon Gautam Adani’s recent stock market woes, Union Minister Smriti Irani urged Indians to stand as one against “foreign powers who try to intervene in India’s democratic processes.”
She referred to Soros’ statement as a “vow to destroy India’s democratic processes” and asserted that Indians have already overcome such “foreign powers” that attempted to intervene in our internal affairs and will do so once more. She urged everyone in India to respond to George Soros in a dignified manner.
She stated that George Soros declared funding of over $1 Bn, specifically to target leaders like PM Modi, to be significant. “George Soros wants a government that is flexible to his requirements,” she claimed. Irani added, “Today as a citizen, I call upon every person and group to denounce the purpose of this person (Soros), who seeks to vilify our democracy, weaken our democratic interests, and bring an onslaught to the economy of India, all for his own gain.Regarding Soros’ comment, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated it had “nothing to do with George Soros” and that Congress, opposition parties, and India’s electoral process will determine whether the Adani scandal “sparked a democratic resurgence.”As Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s personal aide Praveen Chakravarty tweeted, the BJP’s national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla claimed on Friday that the Congress cannot disassociate itself from the assertion made by billionaire investor George Soros that Adani’s “woes will spur democratic renaissance in India.”
