Around 1,200 people were on two trains that arrived at Howrah station on Saturday, one of which was the tragic 12864 Sir M Visvesvaraya Howrah Superfast Express.According to officials, the helpline number at West Bengal’s Howrah station hasn’t stopped ringing since it was established following the railway catastrophe in Balasore, Odisha, which claimed nearly 300 lives.Since Friday evening, calls have been pouring in practically every second. On condition of anonymity, a railway officer at Howrah station remarked, “Those attending the calls are not even getting time to have their tiffin or use the lavatory. We receive calls from travellers inquiring about cancelled trains in addition to inquiries concerning the accident.
On Friday night, Purnima Gayen’s family members made numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact the Howrah and Kharagpur helplines. Haran Gayen, Nishikanta Gayen, and Dibakar Gayen, three of her sons, were travelling on the Coromandel Express.
“We learned that they had all passed away early on Thursday. They were riding the railway after leaving for employment in Andhra Pradesh. We tried calling all of the hotline numbers as soon as we saw the accident on television. They were all busy, a relative who should remain nameless told the media. “We were unable to speak with the three brothers at all. One of the survivors, who was from a nearby village, later informed us that they had passed away.
